Tea Ceremony as a Time to Meet Yourself
What Ten Years of Tea Practice Has Taught Me.

What Ten Years of Tea Practice Has Taught Me
When most people hear tea ceremony, they picture something formal, a little intimidating — maybe even out of reach.
But the tea ceremony I know is nothing like that.
It’s warm. It’s welcoming. And honestly, it asks very little of you at the start.
You don’t need experience. You don’t need to know the rules. All you need is the willingness to walk into the room and try.
From there, something quiet begins to happen on its own.
Your mind settles. The noise inside your head softens. Things that felt tangled start to feel a little simpler.
I’ve been practicing tea ceremony for about ten years now — which, in this world, still feels like barely scratching the surface.
And yet, every single lesson gives me something I can’t quite find anywhere else.
Growing Up Around Tea
My grandmother is a tea teacher, so tea ceremony was always somewhere in the background of my life growing up.
But being around something and truly understanding it are two completely different things.
About ten years ago, I started practicing seriously myself.
I still remember the feeling of those first lessons — learning how to hold the tea bowl, how to handle each utensil, how to move with care and awareness.
That was the moment tea ceremony stopped being just “something familiar” and became something that actually meant something to me.
The deeper I went, the more I realized how much was there. Even now, after all these years, I still feel like I’m standing at the entrance.
Always Remaining a Beginner
Even after ten years, there’s still so much I don’t know.
Every lesson reminds me of how far I have to go.
But somewhere along the way, I stopped finding that discouraging.
That endless depth — I think it’s part of what makes tea ceremony so beautiful.
There’s always something new to notice: the feeling of a movement, the mood of the room, the sound of water, the flowers chosen for that day, or even just your own state of mind in that moment.
The more carefully you pay attention, the richer it all becomes.
Maybe being a beginner forever isn’t a sign of failure. Maybe it’s actually a kind of richness.
Why I Wanted to Share This Online
One honest reason I started sharing tea ceremony online is that I wanted to learn alongside other people.
Of course I want to pass on what tea ceremony has given me. But I also find that understanding deepens when you reflect with others — when someone asks a question you hadn’t thought to ask, or notices something you’d walked past a hundred times.
Tea ceremony is often seen as closed-off, strict, hard to approach. I hope this space can be the opposite: somewhere people can explore quietly, ask whatever they’re curious about, and discover things together.
Not a place for perfection. Just a place to slow down for a moment.
The Quietness I Found Through Tea
Life can feel heavy sometimes.
Stress. Exhaustion. The constant pull of responsibilities. That feeling of always being in motion without knowing where you’re going.
I think most people know what that’s like. I certainly do.
But whenever I start a tea lesson, something shifts.
Even on days when I’m completely drained, the worries in my mind gradually begin to fall away. For a little while, I’m just here.
Only the sound of water. Only the movement of my hands. Only this moment.
And somehow, that feels like a gift.
Tea Ceremony and Zen
I don’t think that feeling is a coincidence.
Tea ceremony is deeply connected to Zen philosophy.
Zen is hard to pin down with words, but one idea I keep coming back to is this: facing yourself.
In tea practice, every small action asks for your attention.
The way you walk into the room. The way you prepare each tool. The way you fold the cloth. The way you hold the bowl.
Each movement gently brings you back to right now. And when you’re truly in the present moment, there’s less room for noise, distraction, or anxiety to take hold.
Tea ceremony doesn’t ask you to escape from life.
It quietly teaches you how to be fully in it.
Harmony
There’s something else about tea ceremony that I find myself thinking about often.
There’s an old Japanese phrase that expresses it well:
Wa wo motte tōtoshi to nasu. Harmony is to be valued above all.
To me, that doesn’t mean everyone becoming the same.
It means recognizing differences — and actually respecting them.
I think about this when I look at tea utensils. One piece might seem plain on its own. Another might look a little irregular or imperfect. But placed together, they bring out the beauty in each other.
People might not be so different.
Maybe it’s only when we genuinely face ourselves — all of it, the good parts and the difficult ones — that we become capable of truly honoring others as they are.
The Quiet Begins Inside
People often say tea rooms are quiet.
But I think the deeper quietness starts inside us.
Tea ceremony doesn’t make life’s difficulties disappear. What it does is create a moment — a small window — where you can come back to yourself.
And sometimes, that alone is enough to change how you move through the rest of your day.
Going Forward
There’s still so much I want to learn.
In the future, I’d love to share more about:
- the movements of temae,
- how to receive sweets and tea as a guest,
- the meaning behind seasonal choices,
- and the small details that quietly make everything feel just right.
Not as an expert — but as someone who is still learning, and genuinely enjoying the process.
If anything here sparked a little curiosity, I hope you’ll keep exploring this world with me.
Through tea, maybe we can learn something about Japanese culture — and along the way, something quietly useful about ourselves too.
